The Sunny side of Laura Lynn
I have a big ego…

Conceit, selfish, self-centered, self-absorbed, cocky, and big egos. We have heard a lot from these personalities and most of us can’t stand someone who has these character traits. I don’t believe I was born with much of these boogers and up until a few years ago, I was happy about it. But then 2007 came…

In a matter of 6 months I lost 40 lbs from diet and exercise. I felt amazing (actually, that would be an understatement). I’m confessing right now: I spent a lot more time looking in the mirror. I spent more time doing my hair and makeup. I loved trying on different outfits. And if you ask my husband, he’ll likely vouch that I talked about myself a great deal during this time. I was still interested in other people…I just found a new love for myself that I hadn’t ever experienced. I quickly became paranoid that people would think I was full of myself. But looking back, I know I wasn’t only interested in myself…I was still interested in other people. I just wanted everyone to feel like I felt. I loved myself and I was happy.

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about my dreams, particularly relating to music. I want to be a singer. Who sings and performs. And writes music. I’ve been told many times over the passing months: what you focus on grows. If you believe you’re not good enough, you never will be. If you believe you can’t do it, you can’t do it. So, I’ve been looking at my self-talk. There’s a lot of negative in there and its no wonder I’m not doing more of what I love. Then thought came to me…perhaps sometimes people who seem conceited, self-absorbed or cocky are just overflowing with self-confidence? What if I looked at people in the music business or even Hollywood for example? I asked my Facebook friends today for some help on my “research” on this topic. I asked:

“Give me the name of an actor/actress or singer that you believe is conceited or even cocky”. Here are some responses:

Johnny Depp
John Mayer
Morrissey
Kanye West
Reggie Bush
Gene Simmons

(This example worked out exactly like I hoped it would!)

For those of you that participated, I couldn’t agree more! But here’s what I found when I dug a little deeper.

Johnny Depp“He has won the Golden Globe Award and Screen Actors Guild award for Best Actor. Depp has gained acclaim for his portrayals of numerous characters. Films featuring Depp have grossed over $3.1 billion at the United States box office and over $7.6 billion worldwide. He has been nominated for top awards many times, winning the Best Actor Awards from the Golden Globes, and the Screen Actors Guild. He also has twice named as the Sexiest man alive by People magazine. He has been listed in the 2012 Guinness Book Of World Records as the Highest Paid Actor with $75 million.”

John Mayer“He attended Berklee College of Music in Boston. His first two studio albums, Room for Squares and Heavier Things, did well commercially, achieving multi-platinum status. In 2003, he won a Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. Has collaborated with renowned blues artists such as B. B. King, Buddy Guy, and Eric Clapton, and by forming the John Mayer Trio. At the 49th Annual Grammy Awards in 2007 Mayer won Best Pop Vocal Album for Continuum and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. He has sold over 10 million albums in the U.S. and 20 million albums worldwide.”

Morrissey“English singer and lyricist. He rose to prominence in the 1980s as the lyricist and vocalist of the alternative rock band The Smiths. The band was highly successful in the United Kingdom until their break up in 1987, and Morrissey began a solo career, making the top ten of the UK Singles Chart on ten occasions. Widely regarded as an important innovator in indie music, Morrissey has been described by music magazine NME as “one of the most influential artists ever,” and The Independent has stated “most pop stars have to be dead before they reach the iconic status he has reached in his lifetime.” Pitchfork Media has called him “one of the most singular figures in Western popular culture from the last twenty years.”

Kanye West“West first rose to fame as a producer for Roc-A-Fella Records, where he eventually achieved recognition for his work on Jay-Z’s album The Blueprint, as well as hit singles for musical artists including Alicia Keys, Ludacris, and Janet Jackson. His five solo albums, all of which have gone platinum, have received numerous awards and critical acclaim. As of 2011, West has won a total of fourteen Grammy Awards. All albums have been very commercially successful, with My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy becoming his fourth consecutive No.1 album in the U.S. upon release. West has had 5 songs exceed 3 million in digital sales as of July 2011, with “Gold Digger” selling 3,086,000, “Stronger” selling 4,402,000, “Heartless” selling 3,742,000, “E.T.” selling over 4,000,000 and “Love Lockdown” selling over 3,000,000 placing him third in overall digital sales of the past decade . He has sold over 25 million digital songs in the United States placing him second for solo male artists on the list and sixth overall for best selling digital artists. West also runs his own record label GOOD Music, home to artists such as John Legend, Common and Kid Cudi. About.com ranked Kanye West No.8 on their “Top 50 Hip-Hop Producers” list. On May 16, 2008, Kanye West was crowned by MTV as the year’s No.1 “Hottest MC in the Game.” On December 17, 2010, Kanye West was voted as the MTV Man of the Year by MTV. Billboard ranked Kanye West No. 3 on their list of Top 10 Producers of the decade. West has also been included in the Time 100 list of the most influential people in the world as well as being listed in a number of Forbes’ annual lists.”

Reggie Bush“He was drafted by the New Orleans Saints in the first round of the 2006 NFL Draft. Bush won multiple collegiate awards, including the 2005 Heisman Trophy. With the Saints, Bush won a Super Bowl title in 2010.”

Gene Simmons“Vocalist and bassist for Kiss. Kiss has been awarded 24 gold albums to date, the most of any American rock band. The band has sold more than 40 million albums in the United States, of which 20 million have been certified by the RIAA, and their worldwide sales exceeds 100 million albums. The Kiss Alive/Worldwide/Lost Cities/Reunion Tour was the top-grossing act of 1996 and 1997. Kiss has been named to many “Top” lists. They include Number 10 on VH1’s ‘100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock’, 9th on ‘The Greatest Metal Bands’ list by MTV, #1 on Hit Paraders’s “Top 100 Live Bands”, 56th on VH1’s “100 Greatest Artists Of All Time”, 2nd on Digital Dream Door’s “Best Hair Metal Bands”, and 26th on Gibson’s “50 Greatest American Rock Bands”. Kiss was nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, ten years after becoming eligible. “

First- let me clarify, I’m not praising people’s behaviors here. I’m just making an observation.

If Gene Simmons didn’t have a large ego, would have have gone on to lead Kiss into 24 gold albums? Would John Mayer have sold over 10 million albums in the US without being a little conceited? Would a self-conscious and under confident Johnny Depp be making a reported $75 million? Would Kanye West be the 3rd overall digital selling artist in the past decade if he didn’t believe in himself? Would Reggie Bush have won the Heisman Trophy and later lead the Saints into Superbowl Victory? And what about Morressey? Would he have been regarded as one of the most influencial and iconic artists ever? It makes you think.

If anything, it certainly makes me think about my own inner self-dialogue and how opposite I am from these people and how we all see them. I’m not suggesting I should develop some pop-diva monster Ego and demand 42 green skittles at my bedside in the morning…but maybe being my biggest fan and supporter would help me out a little bit. I don’t need to be considered sexiest woman alive, but to be mentioned in People Magazine would rock. And to be invited to the Grammy’s would be amazing, who needs the nods? Maybe I’d be able to attend the Super Bowl…or even sing at one. Perhaps Kanye would produce one of my singles. And maybe…just maybe…I’d get to attend the ceremony when Kiss finally gets inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame…. all made possible by a little bit of ego.

And don’t worry. I won’t forget all you “little people” who knew me as Laura in 2011. ;)
Just keep paddling!

When I first moved to Key West I was vaguely aware of what seemed to be a popular water sport called paddleboarding. The paddlers looked to me like diehard surfers that couldn’t catch a wave in Key West and instead found an innovative use for their surfboard by adding a paddle. Additionally, I found 99 percent of paddlers seem to be in incredible shape, tan and sport name-brand sport apparel. I was born with very little sports enthusiasm so this new sport was especially intimidating. All my reservations aside, something kept pulling my interest towards it. Overtime I looked at paddle boards in shops, observed paddlers on the ocean and discovered people who were involved with the local businesses that hosted tours and board rentals. My curiosity kept growing.

On the brink of my 28th birthday I decided to try something new and proclaim a new take on life, as I seem to do every year on my birthday. This year my goal was to try paddle boarding. I invited my husband to tag along, as his curiosity was right in tune with mine. I didn’t eat a whole breakfast the morning of our first venture. My nerves were chaotic and my stomach in knots. I’m not sure why I was so fearful. I love the ocean and adore being in it, near it and on it whenever possible.

Our first trip lasted two hours. I sat and kneeled most of the time. I learned that while sitting or kneeling feels more stable, it takes much more effort to paddle efficiently.  I sweat like crazy, especially when my husband seemed to be paddling with minimal effort and maintained a 100 foot lead. The view was simply breathtaking, especially in the morning hours when the water was calm. I was happy to be done, but so thankful I tried it. I spent the rest of the day eating horribly unhealthy junk food and laying around the house. I guess I felt like I deserved it.

Shortly after my first paddle I discovered a local water sports company, Lazy Dog, was offering a six-week beginner’s paddle training course. I was apprehensive to try it; did I mention how out of shape I am? With encouragement, I signed up for the class, which I’m now halfway through. Each week is a one hour session and we’ve covered a little more distance each week. With the time limit of one hour, I felt extreme concern that I wouldn’t be able to increase my distance so quickly. Our first paddle was about 1 mile long and last week I paddled 3.5 miles in just about the same amount of time.

For me, paddleboarding is the perfect metaphor for my life; much of it is about balance. If you stand too much to the left or right you will fall off. If you’re not centered on your board, you’re more likely to fall into the water or find it very difficult to paddle forward. Using the right paddle technique is essential to propelling yourself in the right direction. If your paddle is too far away from the board, you tend to wobble and veer to the right or left. When you keep your paddle close to your board you’re more likely to move straight ahead. It’s also a mental workout! If I get stuck against a current or against a strong wind and think “I’ll never get out of this”, odds are it will feel like a heavy challenge. However, if I keep my head down and try to enjoy the scenery while giving a tough paddle, I find I get unstuck much quicker.

Regardless of my experience and opinion, its observable fact that paddleboarding is becoming quite the hot sport. Grab the latest sports and fitness magazine off the news shelf and you’re likely to find an article about it. Lazy Dog has a media page in which they seem to be collecting local news about the sport. I was able to wrangle up a few other resources (PaddleBoarding.com, Standup Paddle Magazine and Stand Up Paddle Surfing Magazine to name a few).

That being said, I want to give a shout out to the other Key West water sports companies who offer paddleboarding. I go to Lazy Dog because I have friends that work there and I’ve had such a great experience. Eventually I’ll branch out to other companies and you should too! Here are a few other Key West companies that offer paddleboarding as well as other fun water activities:

What have you wanted to do for years but haven’t gotten around to yet?

Be a singer and write songs. Not like a karaoke singer. A real singer. Who performs on a regular basis and is creative musically. Soon! I’m getting there!

Ask me anything

My husband and I are heading to KW next week to celebrate my 30th birthday! We will be there for 5 days. Can you suggest some places that have great food and drinks?? Anything else would be welcomed :)

I am SO sorry about not getting back to you! We left the rock for vacation and I am just now seeing this!

Have you already gone to Key West? I have some great suggestions for you if you haven’t yet left for your trip! Just let me know!

The Oil Spill

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock, you know all about the recent oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico that is wreaking havoc on the ecosystem in which it invades. Unfortunately, the damage is hitting close to home and I’m pissed off.

Until now, I’ve not been one to stand for putting a stop to wrongdoing. Maybe it’s laziness, or selfishness, but I’m starting to understand my place in the world. The oil spill is one of those wrongdoings I feel the need to stand against as it is threatening to ruin our beautiful Key West. I would normally not ask for anything from anyone…but this time it’s different.

I want you to picture the place you love to live. Think of all the things you love about it. The giant tree in your front yard. The way the hill down the street slopes at the perfect angle for sledding. The beach where you used to picnic with your family as a child. Think about your favorite movie theater that you go to watch epic new releases. What about your favorite restaurant where your family goes for special occasions? Now imagine a disaster occurred that threatened to take all of this away from you. Businesses start to lose money and people begin to lose their jobs. Creatures in the wild, including endangered species and those in which restaurants rely on, begin dying off. Everything around you is ruined.

This is the reality I am facing. It was 8 short months ago we moved to this island paradise…and mainly for the ecosystem. We adore the sandy beaches, the blue ocean waters, the big bright sunshine and the thousands of creatures that live and rely on the ocean that surrounds us. While it’s unclear when, the oil spill is reaching the Gulf Stream Loop that wraps around the tip of Florida and the Florida Keys. We are going to be hit. There are so many wavering reports that we’re not sure what to expect. But to think that everything we love and adore about this place could be lost is simply heartbreaking.

So you might be asking: how can I help? The biggest thing you could do…if you can get some time off…is to come to the South and volunteer where the damage has struck. It’s not just Florida. It’s every state bordering the Gulf. As soon as we get back from our Midwestern trip, we’ll be volunteering our hours of time to help in any way we can.

Additionally, be informed! There is enough information going around for you to review and take it in. This is reality. It is happening. We’re talking unmeasurable amounts of damage that is to follow in the result of this disaster. The link below provides a plethora of resources that you can trust. Read them. Follow them. Check in daily-every minute it creeps closer and closer to our shores. Help us spread the word. Maybe you can’t afford to come down here to help…but if you spread the word around, maybe you can help influence someone else to. We need the help. We’re talking about innocent critters and wild life. They didn’t deserve this.

The Keys Oil Spill Volunteer Relief is the organization in which we’ll be focusing our efforts on. http://www.keysspill.com/

The photo below shows satellite imagery projecting the oil spill in the Gulf. As you can see, it’s already entered into the Loop Current…it’s a ticking time bomb.

New rule: All salads should be healthy.

All salads should be healthy.
We’d all like to think salads are healthy…but they aren’t. As a salad loving girl needing to watch her figure, this creates a problem. Lets just save everyone the salad heartache and make it rule- they gotta be healthy!

You get to pick your job.
Can you imagine how happy we’d all be if we could be doing what we wanted? Or at least learning what we wanted? Of course, we have the power to change this…but it takes time. The trick is- we can’t pick the pay. That’s up to the company and industry standards. But do what you want!!

Love and be loved.
Most of us feel one or both of these to be true on a daily basis. Unfortunately, some do not. It’s the greatest emotion…and some are deprived of it. Can you imagine? From this point on…everyone should give love and feel it in return!

One of my favorite scents in the entire world is coffee. There is something so comforting about it. No matter where I am, at the airport way too early, in an unfamiliar hotel room, reading at your local bookstore, coffee instantly makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

My mother is a coffee fiend. All of our dates have involved one or two stops at the local Starbucks or Caribou. This trend grew on me and in my adult years I’ve stopped many a morning at the aforementioned glorious coffee spots. Even today-I can’t live without my coffee. We brew our own at home, but every now and then a little gourmet cup tastes divine!

Since I live in Key West now, Caribou just isn’t an option. Starbucks is here, but it feels somewhat weird. Not to mention the terrible inconvenient location right off Duval. Where is a local girl supposed to park her scooter while she zips in for a java chip frap’? So I set out on a little adventure to scope out all the indie shops on the rock. I snapped some shots along the way and wanted to share them with you!

My Top Ten Eats in Key West

My favorite venues and why

It’s no secret; hubby and I like to go out. There’s something fun about winding down from a stressful week with a meal and some drinks out of the house. Okay: sometimes we go out more than that…but who’s counting?

We’ve scoped out many new places to eat here on the rock of Key West. During this culinary adventure we’ve gained some favorite places. Here’s our top ten eateries (and a little memory of places come and gone that we miss terribly) in the city of Key West.

*Disclaimer* These are in no way listed in order of favorite. To do so would be the impossible; each place has something different to offer!

1)      Turtle Kraals

My favorite thing about this place is the tower bar! It sits above the entire restaurant and overlooks the historic seaport. This fantastic view sets the perfect mood on a sunny Friday night. Happy hour appetizers are fantastic, though you have to sit in the bar or tower bar to enjoy these specials. The staff is very friendly. Any meat you order here is fabulous thanks to the wood-fire grill. Their salads are generous and oh-so-delicious with fresh veggies! Easily, one of my ultimate favorite places to eat in Key West!

2)      Half Shell

This is one of my husband’s favorites; it’s very nostalgic for him! Our favorite thing to eat here are steamed oysters with a side of dill potato salad. If you like potato salad, you must order it here! Fantastic! It’s only a few dollars for a nice serving. We have tried the oysters elsewhere and these taste the best and seem to be one of the best priced options for oysters. They are also located in the historic seaport right on the water. The hundreds of license plates that decorate the walls are fun to gawk at.

3)      Rum Barrel

The dark interior of this place makes you feel like you’re aboard a pirate ship. We have yet to experience the quarter deck up top, but it’s definitely on our list! The bar has the best atmosphere in this establishment with plenty of microbrews to sample. The first time we ate here I fell in love with it. Everything we’ve eaten here has been good: from salads , nachos, fish sandwiches, tacos and yes…potato salad.

4)      Santiago’s Bodega

This was an incredible dining experience; by far the fanciest place with the best tasting food I’ve ever had the pleasure of enjoying. We were treated to Santiago’s by our previous landlord in Minnesota who did very good research and sent us a gift certificate as a thank you for being good tenants. The key to remember here is that they serve tapas: a light appetizer or snack in Spanish cuisine. At first glance of the menu you’ll think the place is very inexpensive. But the portions are small, so you’ll want to order several rounds for two people. It is a very small place; our best guess was it seats 40 people maximum. Needless to say, this makes for a very intimate environment. It’s perfect for a romantic date.

I was so moved by the experience of eating here I wrote a blog post about it. You can view it at my other, purposely neglected, blog at:

http://leprechaunswife.blogspot.com/2009/10/best-meal-of-my-life.html

5)      Blue Heaven

A co-worker of mine recommended this place to us; she said it was heaven. She was right! Described as a local’s favorite, the unique outdoor atmosphere is very relaxing. Chickens wander the lot and will often “beg” for food at your feet. The food here is fantastic! It’s on the more expensive side, but well worth it. We enjoyed our Christmas family dinner here- unforgettable!

6)      Angelina’s pizza

We stumbled across Angelina’s, likely on a rum-filled adventure. I instantly fell in love with it. While you can order an entire ‘za here, we often opt for single slices and some wings. The staff is nice, but you have to dig. I was quite shocked when they practically screamed that our order was ready. To complete the 1950’s feel, they have several arcade style games.

7)      Jack Flats

Great for football!  They claim to have more TV screens than we were able to find, but it’s pretty much wall-to-wall screens. Again, everything we’ve eaten here is good. We discovered they have very yummy sliders and wings! Appetizers and salads are my favorite selections from this Duval St restaurant.

8)      China Garden West

I had to include just one delivery place. We’re frequent customers here! They have a very large menu with decent prices; seafood is generally not much more than chicken or beef options. Overall, they are decently priced for the portions you get. Whenever we order, we’re pretty much guaranteed two meals each out of the deal!

9)      Old Town Mexican Café

Okay- we’ve eaten here once; in 2007. However, the atmosphere and meal was so good, we’ve vowed to go back. It’s hidden on Duval between Key Lime Square and a building. Trees overhang above you, so you don’t feel smushed, but rather relaxed in this outdoor venue. I recall the shrimp fajitas and guacamole were good! Our favorite feature: bucket of coronas for a very good price!

10)   Upper Crust

Tasty pizza indeed! You can order some fantastic specialties here. We had the chicken fajita pizza and were very impressed! They have free delivery! Just be prepared: on any given night you can pretty much guarantee to be shoulder to shoulder in this little shop!

We’ve reviewed all our favorite eateries here on the island. But a blog post about Key West eats wouldn’t be complete without leaving fond memories of a few places that have left us.

Crabby Dick’s

Distinguished by the big white balcony overlooking Duval St, we adored this place so much we visited daily during our 2007 visit to the island. The happy hour appetizers were unbeatable. The statue of crabby dick, the pirate, was my good friend (it’s true-do a Google image search on “Crabby Dick’s” and the 2nd photo is myself and Crabby Dick himself. At least that’s what we called him). During our 2007 trip we got engaged and our bartender was kind enough to buy us a few rounds of drinks to celebrate. We were so pumped for our 2009 pre-move visit that we planned to visit Crabby Dick’s ever night during our stay. To our great disappointment, they shut their doors some time before we arrived. There was another restaurant that moved in a few months ago, but they too closed their doors after only a few weeks of business.

The Iguana

We met Steve the bartender here! Terrific bartender, wonderful friend, and close neighbor to us! There is a row of bar stools facing Greene Street, which makes for some fun people watching. My absolute favorite food here was the hog wings and tots. Hog wings were tender pork on the bone carved down to look like chicken drummies. So fantastic! However, this past winter they, too, closed their doors. It’s rumored they’ll open their doors again….but the most important question is still unknown. Will they ever serve hog wings in Key West again?

RIP, guys. We miss you terribly!

Now it’s off to find some dinner. What should we eat tonight? :)

Photography. A love I’ve undoubtedly inherited from my shutterbug parents. I took several courses in high school, drooled over fancy cameras…and here I am with nothing to show for it.

One of my best friends Amber recently launched her own photography business (http://www.amberwestmanphotography.com/). I am awe struck and amazed at each post she announces from her shoots. I can see her artistic growth in her amazing pictures! I leave every read of her blog feeling inspired…so…

I decided to take action.

World: Welcome Laura Murphy Photography!

This shoot is highlighting Key West’s literary side. I snapped shots of the library and indie book stores. I hope you enjoy!

More to come…
